“In virtually every aspect in society, it has long been
acknowledged that preventing a problem is superior to
solving it once it has been created.”
--Paul Anastas and John Warner in Elizabeth Grossman’s
book Chasing Molecules
THE
VISION OF HUMAN FOLLY
Folly represents human error when common sense and a little
finesse would have kept a problem from happening in the first place. It
depicts what happens when a small problem unnecessarily grows into a big
one; it embodies the art of whimsy and absurd frolic in the face of chaos and
destruction, and it speaks of these things using the Great Mystery in the flow of
dance, music, literature, writing and art when surrounded by ugliness, the mundane,
low vision and despair. Folly shows its face across a mirrored form, representing
projections, distortions, and biases. Folly wraps itself around serious business as dance,
and serious dance as business. It finds the warp in the drive and the drive in the warp. In
finding folly in ourselves through elevated creative vision, we are able to transform and transcend.
The figures in a medieval scene of
ice skating by Esaias van de Velde
have gleefully shifted from the
heavier walking afoot to gliding on
ice skates as they go about their
various activities. They do so in an
atmosphere which carries a feeling of
nostalgic history, art and whimsical freedom
or caprice as they do so surrounded by old
interesting buildings and wearing colorful
and expressive garb. They represent a sort of
jubilant folly.
Other types of folly would be the folly of
foible or feebleness, as in behavior which is
remiss in duty or inept in forethought, both
of which are represented in one way or
another on this website as polluting power plants and gas wells filling our air with foul smells, health depleting
toxins and gray smudge; increasingly drained water reservoirs with continued heavy water demands; jobs at the
expense of the soul by placing people between a rock and hard place when it comes to bad work versus bare bones
survival: bad work as drudgery using harsh and inefficient practices and survival as income, shelter, food, water,
clothing and, with any luck, some kind of quality of life beyond that. We find problems in unsafe driving practices,
such as pushing ourselves and others unnecessarily past our limits.
In summary, the folly is in the fact things could be done better but often are not in the way we obtain modern
conveniences, put activities together which we call work, and regularly ignore environmental issues related to
human health, safety and well-being. We explore some of these aspects on this website.
See the Prophecy Rock at Oraibi picture from book listed below, and pay attention to the note which reads:
“Representing the Hopi prophecy that offers the choice between the technological Path of the Two-hearted that
leads to the destruction, or the planting Path of the One-hearted, that leads to the Creator. Courtesy of the Late
David Monongye.” The picture shows one line drawn with men of technology, what looks like a swastika and UFO,
etc. leading to the crooked mind path; the other line shows the path of a man planting corn in a field. Describes the
life and views of Daniel M. Salter as a member of the tribal Brotherhood of the Snake (French Comanche). Reports
as a former CIA/NRO Agent. (See the article “Truth” in book Legends of the Star Ancestors. Stories of Extraterrestrial
Contact from Wisdomkeepers around the World. Compiled by Nancy Red Star. 2002)

Note: It is not known whether or not The Prophecy Rock is legitimate or a historic era rendition. Either way, the
ideas implicit in its message are usable. One interpretation might be the need to distinguish between a life of the
clever mind and body with an empty soul versus a life with a profound mind/heart/body unity which constitutes a full
and whole soul. If so, this might be thought of as the difference between the hollow and the hallowed.
